Japanese Baby Underwear Culture Was New to Us

Baby Clothes & Gauze

Before becoming parents, we had no idea how many different kinds of baby underwear existed in Japan.

When our baby was born, we first started using short-sleeve baby undergarments called “tan hada-gi” and longer wrap-style undergarments called “combination hada-gi.” Many Japanese parents layer these clothes together during the newborn stage.

At first, the different names and layers felt confusing to us, but over time we realized that many Japanese baby clothes are designed to make temperature adjustment easier throughout the seasons.

As our baby grew, we gradually started using bodysuits and simpler innerwear instead of the traditional newborn-style layers.

We also noticed that soft cotton and gauze materials are very common in Japan. They feel gentle on the skin and work well in Japan’s humid summers and changing seasons.

One store we use very often is Nishimatsuya, a popular Japanese baby and children’s store. Their baby underwear is simple, affordable, and easy to buy in different sizes as babies grow quickly.

In Japan, babies seem to go through different styles of underwear depending on their age and development, and learning about these small details became one of the interesting parts of parenting for us 🇯🇵

Baby Items We Used Often

Nishimatsuya baby underwear is one of the items we use most often, but since it is not easily available on Amazon, we are sharing a similar baby underwear set from Akachan no Shiro, another well-known baby brand in Japan 🇯🇵
