Songs Japanese Parents Still Sing to Their Babies

Baby Life

One thing that surprised us after becoming parents was how naturally Japanese nursery songs became part of everyday life with our baby.👶🎵

Many of these songs were already familiar to us from our own childhoods. Even though we had not sung them for many years, we somehow still remembered the melodies and lyrics once we became parents ourselves.

Some songs also brought back memories of singing together with family members, friends, and teachers when we were small children.

Now, we find ourselves singing those same songs again to our own baby.

Sometimes we sing during diaper changes, playtime, or bedtime, and sometimes we even play the melodies on the piano at home.

As we became more interested in these songs again, we also learned that Japan has both “Doyo” and “Warabe Uta.”

“Doyo” are children’s songs that were often written by known composers and became popular in modern Japan.

“Warabe Uta,” on the other hand, are older traditional songs that have been passed down through generations, often together with hand games and simple movements.

Learning the difference between them as adults felt surprisingly interesting to us.

Nowadays, it is also easy to listen to nursery songs from other countries on YouTube, and discovering those different melodies and styles has been very interesting for us as well.

Many of the songs are simple, gentle, and repetitive, which seems to make babies smile and pay attention naturally.

Our baby especially seems to enjoy songs with hand movements and playful interaction.

Before becoming parents, we did not realize how meaningful these small songs could feel, but now they have quietly become part of our family’s daily rhythm.

We hope these songs and little traditions will continue to be passed down to future generations in Japan 🇯🇵
