One of the Japanese baby books we often see recommended in Japan is the “Daruma-san” picture book series.
What feels especially meaningful to us is that these books were already popular when we were children ourselves, and now we are reading them again with our own baby.
Before becoming parents, we did not think much about children’s picture books, but after having our baby, we started noticing the “Daruma-san” books everywhere — in bookstores, baby sections, gifts for new parents, and recommendations from other families.
What surprised us most was how much babies seem to react to the books.
The stories are very simple, but the rhythm, repetition, and funny movements seem to capture babies’ attention very naturally. Our baby would often smile, move, and watch carefully while we were reading.
We also felt that the books were easy and fun for parents to read aloud because the words are short, playful, and expressive.
In Japan, the “Daruma-san” series seems to be one of the popular first picture books many families introduce during babyhood.
The illustrations are simple and warm, and reading the books together somehow feels nostalgic and comforting at the same time.
Before becoming parents, we did not realize how meaningful small moments like reading together could become, but picture books slowly became part of our daily routine with our baby 🇯🇵
